Having a hard time getting your child to eat? Advice on how to improve the quality of your child’s dietary intake: Avoid intruding on food regulation. Never impose punishments on children to eat. Parents should be taught to resist the urge to use threats, punishments, pleadings and bribery to force kids to eat. Try to avoid arguments during mealtime. All of these have been shown to interfere with intake and may even reinforce a child’s dislike for a particular food. Such eating experiences are equated by the child with unpleasant and threatening situations. When parents provide pleasant opportunities to enjoy nutritious and varied diets and allow their children their own intake, “picky eaters” can and do develop healthy eating habits.
